After the uprising, the shogunate wrecked the castle where the rebels had held out and buried it in earth; excavations from the 1990s on brought its stone walls and devotional objects back to light.

The young man regarded as leader of the Shimabara-Amakusa Uprising. In 1637 he barricaded himself in the abandoned Hara Castle with people from the southern Shimabara Peninsula and Amakusa, and died when it fell the next year.
In the main enclosure of Hara Castle stand a statue of Shiro at prayer by Kitamura Seibo, a sculptor from Minamishimabara, and Shiro's gravestone, moved here after it was found built into a stone wall of a house in Nishiarie.
