足利義兼
Second head of the Minamoto-descended Ashikaga clan. He built the family residence at Ashikaga and founded Banna-ji with a private Buddhist hall inside it.
In 1196 he became a monk and built a hall for the Buddha Dainichi inside his residence; his Buddhist name, Banna, became the temple's name. The temple says he spent his last years at Hokaiji in Kabasaki, a temple he founded in memory of his mother, and died there in 1199.
