Eighth head of the Chiba clan based at Moto Sakura Castle, who married a daughter of Hojo Ujimasa and tied the clan closely to the Hojo.
Clay dishes with the same features as those from the Hojo's Odawara Castle have been found at Moto Sakura, which the town says reflects strong Hojo influence in his time. After Kunitane was assassinated, Ujimasa's son Naoshige succeeded to the Chiba family.
