Date Munetoshi

伊達宗利

Second lord of the Uwajima domain and a grandson of Date Masamune. He carried out a major renovation of Uwajima Castle in 1661–1672 and built the surviving keep around 1666.

Story

He told the shogunate he was 'repairing' the keep, but in fact he removed Todo Takatora's lookout-style keep on bare rock and built a new, up-to-date stacked keep on a stone platform.

The three-tiered, three-story keep in the main enclosure, June 2017. Built around 1666 by Date Munetoshi, second lord of the Uwajima Date family, it is one of Japan's twelve original surviving keeps.
