江川英龍(坦庵)
Hereditary magistrate (daikan) of Nirayama in Izu, also known as Egawa Taro'zaemon and by his pen name Tan'an. He studied Western gunnery under Takashima Shuhan, and after Perry's arrival he was put in charge of choosing the sites for the Shinagawa batteries and casting cannons, personally directing the work until six batteries were completed.
His own original plan for the batteries was not adopted as proposed, but he went on to direct the work himself and saw six batteries through to completion.
