遠藤常友
Grandson of Endo Yoshitaka and lord of the Gujo domain. In 1667 he carried out a major rebuilding of the castle and town.
He rebuilt the town, burned in a great fire in the 1650s, around a network of water channels to make it fire-resistant. This "town of water" is seen as the foundation of today's Gujo Hachiman.
