榎本武揚
A shogunate naval commander who, after the shogunate fell, sailed with its fleet to Ezo and fought the new government from Goryokaku (the Battle of Hakodate). After surrendering, he went on to serve the Meiji government as an official and naval officer.
In August 1868 he slipped out of Shinagawa with the fleet and landed at Washinoki (today's Mori) on October 20. On the 26th his forces occupied the abandoned Goryokaku, and on December 15 they set up a regime with him as president. Cornered by the new government's all-out attack in May 1869, he surrendered on May 18.
