Tradition places the home of the Kamakura-era warrior Hatakeyama Shigetada here, but the 5-meter ramparts and deep moats you walk among today belong to a Warring States castle built some 300 years later.

畠山重忠
An early Kamakura-period warrior of Musashi who served Minamoto no Yoritomo, distinguished himself at battles such as Uji River and Ichinotani, and was trusted as a leader of the Musashi warriors. He is said to have lived at Sugaya Yakata.
According to the Azuma Kagami, in 1205 he heard of trouble in Kamakura and left "Sugaya residence" with only 134 horsemen, only to be ambushed and killed by a large Hojo force at Futamatagawa, in today's Asahi Ward, Yokohama.
