土方歳三
Vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, the shogunate's police force in late-Edo Kyoto. In the Boshin War he fought across Japan as a commander of the former shogunate forces and was killed in the Battle of Hakodate.
During the new government's all-out attack on May 11, 1869, he set out to relieve the Benten Point battery, the former shogunate's main stronghold, which was close to falling. After passing the Ippongi checkpoint he was shot and killed near the Ikokubashi bridge, close to today's Jujigai tram stop.
