本多成重
Became lord of Maruoka Castle in 1613 and, in 1624, the first lord of the independent Maruoka domain, separate from Fukui. Sakai City's research attributes the present keep to his time.
His father, Honda Shigetsugu, sent his wife a famously short letter from the battlefield: "A brief note: beware of fire, don't make O-Sen cry, keep the horses fed." O-Sen was Narishige, whose childhood name was Senchiyo. Inspired by this letter, Sakai City has run a national contest for the shortest letters since 1993.
