細川忠利
Lord of Kokura in Buzen who took over Higo in 1632 after the Kato family was removed. From then until the Meiji Restoration, Kumamoto Castle belonged to the Hosokawa. Skilled in both arts and arms, he invited the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi to spend his last years in Kumamoto.
When he arrived, he is said to have stepped down from his palanquin in front of the castle's West Main Gate and bowed deeply in gratitude for being granted the 540,000-koku domain of Higo.
