A military scholar and Confucian scholar of the Takasaki domain, counted among the three great military scholars of the late Edo period. He designed Matsumae (Fukuyama) Castle.
He was entrusted with designing the new Fukuyama Castle, begun in 1850. The finished castle had 16 gates, a three-tiered turret, three two-tiered turrets, and seven gun batteries in the outer enclosure near the sea to face foreign ships.
