Thirteenth lord of Hikone. As the shogunate's chief minister (tairo) he dealt with the difficult issues around opening Japan to the world, and was assassinated in Edo.
He was deeply versed in the tea ceremony, and the phrase ichigo ichie ("one time, one meeting") is said to have been coined by him.
