笠間時朝
Born into a branch of the Utsunomiya family, he is said to have built Kasama Castle on Mt. Sashiro in the Kamakura period as its first lord. Rulers of Kasama used the castle for some 750 years afterward.
In 1250 he is said to have enshrined the gods of the Utsunomiya family's guardian shrine at a shrine in the castle town, making them protectors of the castle and town (today's Sansho Shrine). He was also a poet who invited masters of verse from the capital to hold poetry gatherings in Kasama.
