九戸政実
Head of the Kunohe family, a branch of the Nanbu clan, and lord of Kunohe Castle. He opposed Nanbu Nobunao in a succession dispute, rose in revolt in 1591, and fought the huge army Hideyoshi sent against him at Kunohe Castle.
The attackers sent the abbot of the Kunohe family temple as their envoy, praising Masazane's valor and urging him to surrender in return for sparing the women and children. He accepted and opened the gates, but it was a trick; tradition says he and seven chief retainers were executed at Sanohasama, in today's Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture.
