A grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1638 he moved from Matsumoto in Shinano to Matsue and became the first Matsudaira lord of the Matsue domain.
From his arrival until the Meiji Restoration, the Matsudaira family ruled the Matsue domain, with Matsue Castle as its seat.
