松平忠昌
Second son of Yuki Hideyasu and third lord of the Fukui domain. He is said to have renamed the castle and town from Kitanosho to Fukui (福居), the origin of today's name.
He is said to have changed the name to 福居 in 1624 because the character for "north" also appears in the word for "defeat" and was thought unlucky. The characters later changed to 福井.
