A grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu and elder brother of Tokugawa Mitsukuni of Mito. He became lord of Takamatsu in 1642, the first of 11 generations of Matsudaira lords who ruled for 228 years.
Yorishige remodeled the castle, completing a rebuilt keep in 1670 and adding the east and north enclosures from the next year. Closely related to the shogun's family, he is said to have been tasked with keeping watch over the lords of the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.
