最上義光
The 11th head of the Mogami family and first lord of the Yamagata domain. He built the castle on which today's Yamagata Castle is based, along with a castle town of merchant and craft districts. After holding off the Uesugi army in the Keicho Dewa campaign of 1600, he became a daimyo with 570,000 koku.
He was close in age to Tokugawa Ieyasu and is said to have got on well with him, pleasing him with gifts of hawks and fine horses. Date Masamune was his nephew, the son of his sister Yoshihime. The two were sometimes rivals, but in the 1600 campaign Masamune's reinforcements helped him recover.
