Head of the Sannohe branch of the Nanbu clan and first lord of the Morioka domain. Confirmed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as lord of seven districts, he decided to move his seat from Sannohe to Kozukata (Morioka).
He destroyed the Shiba clan in 1588 and was confirmed in his lands by Hideyoshi in 1590. In 1591, on the advice of Hideyoshi's senior retainer Asano Nagamasa, he decided to move his seat, and in 1597 he is said to have broken ground for Morioka Castle with his heir Toshinao as chief overseer.
