Usuki, Oita
Usuki Castle
臼杵城
The Christian daimyo Otomo Sorin turned an entire rocky island in the sea into his castle; today only its sheer rock faces, rising from the middle of town, recall that it was once an island.

大友宗麟(義鎮)
Warring States daimyo based in Bungo (today's Oita) who extended his power across northern Kyushu, known as a Christian daimyo. He built Usuki Castle on Niujima, an island in Usuki Bay.
Sorin is said to have turned the whole island into a castle and reclaimed the surrounding tidal flats for his town. The Usuki tourism association notes there was a chapel inside the castle and a Christian training house in the town.
