Tsuruoka, Yamagata
Tsurugaoka Castle
鶴ヶ岡城
Every castle building was torn down, yet on the site of the main enclosure stands a shrine that local people built themselves out of devotion to their former lords, the Sakai family.

酒井忠勝
First lord of the Shonai domain. Arriving from Matsushiro in Shinano in 1622, he made Tsurugaoka his seat, expanded the castle by adding a third enclosure, and laid out the castle town. (Not to be confused with his contemporary of the same name, lord of Obama.)
The rebuilding of the castle he began continued for some 50 years over three generations. At Shonai Shrine, which local people built on the main enclosure in the Meiji era, he is enshrined together with three other Sakai lords.
