佐竹義宣
Once a daimyo in Hitachi Province (today's Ibaraki Prefecture), he was moved to Akita in Dewa Province after the Battle of Sekigahara and became the first lord of the Akita domain. He built Kubota Castle on Shinmeiyama hill and laid out its castle town.
Akita City explains that he was ordered to move to Akita because he did not show eagerness to join Tokugawa Ieyasu's Eastern Army at Sekigahara, and because his old domain lay close to Ieyasu's base in Edo.
