新発田重家
An Echigo warlord who served Uesugi Kenshin and Kagekatsu. Unhappy at being denied rewards, he rebelled against Kagekatsu and held out from Shibata Castle for several years before the castle fell and he was killed in 1587.
He fought hard for Kagekatsu in the succession war after Kenshin's death (the Otate Rebellion) but received no reward. Allying with Oda Nobunaga, he pushed Kagekatsu to the brink, until Nobunaga's death at Honnoji in 1582 turned the tables. In the end a traitor inside the castle let it fall, but tradition says even Kagekatsu's side praised how well Shigeie's men fought.
