The last king of the Ryukyu Kingdom, 19th ruler of the Second Sho dynasty. In 1879 troops sent by the Meiji government removed him from Shuri Castle, ending the kingdom and creating Okinawa Prefecture.

During his reign, in 1853, Commodore Perry of the United States came to Ryukyu and visited Shuri Castle.
