A warlord from the family of the strategist Takenaka Hanbei. After the Battle of Sekigahara he took over Funai, finished the incomplete castle with a four-tiered keep in 1602, and laid out the castle town and harbor. First lord of the Funai domain.
According to Oita City, he brought in stonemasons who had worked for Kato Kiyomasa and carpenters and tile makers from Osaka and Fushimi, adopting the most advanced building techniques of the day.
