The ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu and first lord of the Owari domain. He took up residence at Nagoya Castle, founding the Owari Tokugawa, the senior of the three branch houses of the shogun's family.
He lived in the Honmaru Palace, completed in 1615, but moved to the Ninomaru Palace in 1620, after which the Honmaru Palace became a lodging for visiting shoguns.
