The fifteenth and last Tokugawa shogun. In 1867, at the Ninomaru Palace of Nijo Castle, he announced his intention to return governing power to the imperial court.
He became shogun at Nijo Castle in 1866. On October 13, 1867, he gathered senior retainers of 40 domains in the Ohiroma hall of the Ninomaru Palace, and on the 14th he offered to give power back to the court.
