The castle lasted barely ten years, but the moat and grid of streets Hidetsugu laid out at the foot of the hill survive as the town of Omihachiman itself.

豊臣秀次
The son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's elder sister. In 1585 he received 430,000 koku in the eastern Lake Biwa region, built Hachimanyama Castle and founded its town. He was later made imperial regent by Hideyoshi but was forced to take his own life in 1595.
Following Oda Nobunaga's example, he issued free-market regulations and laid out a grid-plan town and the Hachiman-bori moat, laying the foundations of today's Omihachiman. Often called the "murderous regent," he is now known, says the Shiga Board of Education, to have governed soundly while lord of Hachimanyama.
