An adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin. After Kenshin's death he fought Kenshin's other adopted son, Uesugi Kagekatsu, for the succession in the Otate Rebellion, lost, and took his own life at Samegao Castle in 1579. He was born into the Hojo family of Odawara.
The defeated Kagetora holed up in Samegao Castle with only a few men, but the castle's commander, Horie Munechika, was being urged by Kagekatsu to switch sides, and Kagetora took his own life there. Letters Kagekatsu wrote in the third month of 1579 record these events. A statue of Kagetora stands at Shofukuji Temple at the foot of the hill.
