Yamaga Soko

山鹿素行

Confucian scholar and military theorist of the early Edo period. Exiled to Ako, he spent more than eight years in Oishi Tanomonosuke's mansion in the castle's second enclosure, and is said to have redesigned the Ninomaru gateway.

Story

In his diary Soko recorded being invited to tea at a pavilion in the Ninomaru garden and entertained with boating on a pond he called Kintai-ike. His notes help explain the garden revealed by excavation.
