柳沢吉保
Chamberlain to the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. His ancestors came from Kai, and after becoming lord of Kofu Castle in 1704 he did more than anyone to develop the castle and its town.
Until then Kofu Castle had been reserved for members of the shogun's own family, but Yoshiyasu became its lord as an ordinary daimyo. He moved to Kofu with his retainers and their families and reorganized the samurai quarters in and around the castle. The Yamanote gates rebuilt in 2007 recreate their appearance in his time, based on old maps.
