What you will be able to do

Nihon Buyoh is Japan's classical dance, performed with precise posture, quiet steps and expressive use of the fan. This course is being prepared with Fujima Kanremi. The lesson plan below is a proposed outline; the movements, music and filming will be decided with the instructor. If you would like to hear when it opens, please contact us.

  4. D04Bowing and Respect7 minUnderstand the bow introduced in the lesson and how a movement begins.
  5. D05Introduction to Suriashi6 minMove a short distance with suriashi, paying attention to step length and body direction.
  6. D06Hands, Gaze and Expression6 minObserve how combining hands, gaze and head changes the impression of a movement.

  8. D08Expression with a Fan7 minTry a basic expression with the fan chosen by the instructor.

What to prepare

  • A clear space of about 2 × 2 metres, away from furniture
  • A floor that is not slippery, and socks or tabi
  • Clothes you can move in (a yukata is welcome but not required)
  • A folding fan (optional — an alternative movement is shown)

Move only within a comfortable range. Kneeling and deep bends are always optional. The course does not award any school rank, natori name or licence.

About the certificate

The Certificate of Completion shows that you finished every lesson check and the final understanding check. It is not a government qualification, professional licence or school/lineage credential, and it does not assess your practical skill.

When does it open?

Not yet decided. Supervision and filming start after October 2026.

Is this the same as maiko dance?

No. Schools of Nihon Buyoh differ. This course introduces basics taught by an instructor of the Fujima-ryu Kan'emon school.
