Katakura Kagetsuna

片倉景綱

A senior retainer of Date Masamune and the first Katakura Kojuro. Chosen by Masamune's father Terumune to be the young Masamune's guardian, he served Masamune all his life. In 1602 he became lord of Shiroishi Castle, which his family then held until the Meiji era.

Story

When Hideyoshi besieged Odawara and Masamune was late to join him, Kagetsuna is known for arguing against defiance and urging Masamune to go to Odawara and make peace. Katakura family records count this as the first of three times the family saved the Date house from disaster.

The castle of Katakura Kojuro, right-hand man to Date Masamune: allowed to survive as the Sendai domain's second castle after the one-castle-per-province rule, with its three-story turret rebuilt in wood and clay in 1995.
