Story

He is ranked with Todo Takatora and Kato Kiyomasa as a master castle builder and advised on the layouts of Osaka, Hiroshima and Nagoya (Hizen) castles. Tradition says that while held for over a year in a dungeon after trying to persuade the rebel Araki Murashige, he was encouraged by wisteria flowers he could see from his cell, and later took the wisteria as his family crest.
