溝口秀勝
A warlord who fought under the Niwa family and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1598 he was given a 60,000-koku domain in Shibata, began building Shibata Castle, and became the first lord of the Shibata domain.
When he moved to Shibata, Hideyoshi issued him a sealed order to bring every one of his retainers but to leave behind all farmers registered in the land survey. On arrival he first lived in a residence at Ijimino while laying out and building Shibata Castle. The city credits him with starting the flood control and land reclamation that later turned the Kanbara Plain into farmland.
