島津忠恒(家久)
Head of the Shimazu family of Satsuma, who built Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle around 1601. He later took the name Iehisa.
Although he ruled a vast 770,000-koku domain, he built no keep at Kagoshima Castle. Kagoshima Prefecture explains this as a deliberate choice by an old family that valued tradition: a residence modeled on the Muromachi shoguns' palace, backed by a mountain stronghold.
