A Nara-period aristocrat and son of the powerful statesman Fujiwara no Nakamaro. As governor in Mutsu he carried out a major rebuilding of Tagajo in 762, and the work is recorded on the Tagajo Stele.
The final lines of the Tagajo Stele give its date as the first day of the 12th month of 762, alongside Asakari's name and titles. Two years later, in 764, he joined his father Nakamaro's revolt and was killed with the rest of the family.
