Editorial policy

A bilingual database of hot springs across Japan, searchable by spring type, water colour, bathing style and scenery. Areas, facilities, baths and spring sources are recorded separately. Filter for radon springs, free-flowing (kakenagashi) baths, solo travel and public transport. With an editorial 100, a prefecture map, a personal onsen passport and a comparison of bathing cultures around the world.

We do not claim "complete coverage". The official statistics are not a list of names, and collection by name is a separate effort.

How we use AI

Articles are edited by the editorial team (including AI) from public sources and checked by people. No generated images are used as photos of real onsen.

Review policy

No reviews yet. While the review platform is being prepared, we do not display fictional reviews or ratings.

The "editors' guide" above is written by the editors from sources; it is not a visitor's opinion.

Advertising & partnerships

Advertising and partnerships: the 100 and the search order are decided by the editors independently of any advertising, sponsorship or booking links.

How we update

The number of onsen this atlas has collected and checked by name, prefecture by prefecture, beside official statistics from the Ministry of the Environment. These are coverage figures, not the total number of hot springs in Japan. We keep updating with the aim of covering every onsen in the country.
