What makes it special
Forty minutes from Senzu Station on one of six buses a day. In a gorge at the gateway to the Southern Alps, soak in a sulfur spring called 'the beauty-making bath' and cross a suspension bridge that takes ten people at a time.
The Oigawa Railway's Sumatakyo bus runs from Senzu Station to Sumatakyo Onsen in about 40 minutes for 900 yen, six services a day. Wikipedia gives a sulfur spring at 43.7 °C and 540 litres a minute, and the town-run open-air bath is named 'Bijo-zukuri-no-yu'. The Kawanehon tourism association says the Dream Bridge takes only ten people at a time, one way.[5][2][6]
Facilities come from the register (Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, official sites). Those marked "natural spring unconfirmed" are listed on the basis of their name only.
From Kanaya on the Oigawa Railway, train to Ieyama (about 35 min), Kawanehon town bus to Senzu Station (about 45 min), then the Oigawa Railway Sumatakyo bus (about 40 min, 900 yen). Six buses each way daily. By car, the end of Prefectural Route 77.
Per Wikipedia the water is a sulfur spring at 43.7 °C, flowing at 540 litres a minute. Kawanehon town says the open-air bath leaves skin 'slick and smooth', which is where the name 'beauty-making bath' comes from. Sulfur water is commonly said to soften the skin's surface; we report that only as the local description. The source was developed by drilling in 1962, after an earlier spring in a nearby hamlet was drowned by dam construction. pH and analysis sheets could not be read on official pages.

In the village (368-3 Senzu, Kawanehon) The town-run open-air bath: 400 yen adults, 200 children. Fri–Sun 10:00–17:30 (last entry 17:00), Mon 11:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed Tue–Thu, with shorter hours in winter and off-season. Run by the local bathhouse cooperative.
The town describes the water as leaving skin 'slick and smooth'. It is the one public bath where you can test the slippery sulfur water without staying at an inn.[3][4][7]
On the Sumatakyo Promenade loop, over the Oma dam lake A suspension bridge over an emerald-green lake. Ten people at a time, one direction only. The trail opens 8:00–17:00 and the gate is locked at 17:00; cross the bridge by 16:00. In leaf season (late Oct–Nov) the wait can reach two hours. A conservation contribution of 500 yen is requested.
The loop takes about 90–100 minutes with 304 steep steps along the way. Pray for love at the midpoint of the bridge, they say, and it will be granted.[6][8][9][7]
Senzu Station to Sumatakyo Onsen The Oigawa Railway's Sumatakyo bus: about 40 minutes in, 65 out, 900 yen adults / 450 children, six each way daily (first 5:50, last 17:20). Since the 2022 typhoon the main railway is cut between Kawaneonsen-Sasamado and Senzu, so from Kanaya you ride the train to Ieyama (about 35 min) and the town bus to Senzu (about 45 min).
Getting there by bus is part of the experience. The more changes it takes, the quieter it feels when you arrive.[5][10][9]
Hot water was known here from 1889, but that spring, in a nearby hamlet, was drowned by dam construction. The present spring was drilled in 1962, and a village of eight inns grew up in a logging valley at the gateway to the Southern Alps. A locomotive of the Senzu forest railway is preserved in the village, a reminder of the timber years. In 1968 the Kin Hiro hostage incident made the name known across Japan.[2]
The water is a sulfur spring at 43.7 °C, 540 litres a minute (Wikipedia). Kawanehon town says the open-air bath leaves skin 'slick and smooth', hence the name 'beauty-making bath'. The town bath costs 400 yen and opens only Friday to Monday, closing Tuesday to Thursday. There is also a hand bath in the village, so even day visitors can feel the slipperiness of the water.[2][4][7][11]
The Dream Bridge hangs over the emerald water of the Oma dam lake and is crossed ten people at a time, one way. The trail opens from 8:00 to 17:00, the gate is locked at 17:00, and walkers are asked to be over the bridge by 16:00. The promenade loop runs via the Angel Tunnel, the bridge, the Ozakizaka viewpoint and the Hiryu Bridge in about 90–100 minutes, with 304 steep steps. In leaf season the wait can reach two hours. A 500 yen conservation contribution is requested.[6][8][9][11]
The Oigawa main line has been cut between Kawaneonsen-Sasamado and Senzu since the 2022 typhoon: train from Kanaya to Ieyama, then the town bus to Senzu, about 45 minutes. From Senzu the Oigawa Railway bus takes about 40 minutes to Sumatakyo Onsen, 900 yen, six a day; the return down the mountain road takes about 65 minutes. The association's day-trip model leaves Kanaya at 11:04, reaches the village at 13:40, and leaves at 16:20 to be back in Kanaya by 19:24.[10][5][9]
