Official classification
Official spring-type name (as recorded)Sodium chloride-bicarbonate spring (weakly alkaline, hypotonic, high-temperature), with humic organic matter — a 'moor' spring
Appearance & feel
Colour and feel are listed only where a source states them. They vary by day and by bath.
What makes it special
Not volcanic heat but ancient plants: the brown, silky 'moor' spring that defines the type in Japan.
Facilities come from the register (Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, official sites). Those marked "natural spring unconfirmed" are listed on the basis of their name only.
From Obihiro Station bus terminal, Tokachi Bus route 45 reaches Tokachigawa Onsen-minami in about 28 minutes, 7 times a day (fewer at weekends). From New Chitose Airport the Tokachi Milky Liner takes about 2 h 13 min, 3 times a day.
Tokachigawa's water is heated deep beneath the Tokachi plain rather than by a volcano, and rises through peat on the way up. Humic substances from long-decayed plants dissolve into it, giving a clear brown colour and a silky, slippery feel. It is weakly alkaline with salt and bicarbonate, and the inns like to compare it to a skin lotion. Posted indications include chronic skin conditions and poor circulation, which is not a guarantee of results.
Posted indications: neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, haemorrhoids, chronic digestive and skin conditions, convalescence, fatigue, general health, gynaecological complaints, poor circulation, cuts and burns
Indications are an official statement based on the water analysis, not a guarantee of treatment. They are kept separate from opinions.

Every inn in the resort A weakly alkaline sodium chloride-bicarbonate spring carrying humic matter, 55–60°C at 500–700 m depth. Inns describe the water as feeling like a skin lotion.
Its colour and feel tell you at once this water did not come from a volcano.[1][2][6]
Tokachigawa-onsen Kita 14, Otofuke A roadside station opened in July 2020 with a swimwear moor-spring spa that families can share. Open 9:00–19:00 May–Oct (to 21:00 Fri–Sun and holidays), closed some Tuesdays.
Try the moor water without staying overnight or undressing.[4]
Tokachigaoka Park A light-and-sound show on the snowfield on winter nights. In 2026: 24 Jan–15 Feb, 19:00–21:00, 500 yen (300 for resort guests).
The frozen Tokachi night and a hot bath in the same evening.[5]
The earliest record, from 1874, calls it 'Otofuke River Bath'. In 1900 Ema Kahei began using the spring, and in 1913 Maeda Tomosaburo drilled into 30–36°C water and opened an inn. A 1928 borehole by Amemiya Komahei struck an abundant 42°C flow, and in 1933 the resort took the name Tokachigawa Onsen.[1]
'Moor' is the German word for bog or peatland. Beneath the Tokachi plain lies a bed of peat built from ancient vegetation; water heated deep below passes through it and dissolves humic matter on the way up. That is how a plain with no volcano came to have a hot spring. The moor spring became a Hokkaido Heritage asset in 2004 and the name was registered as a regional trademark in 2008.[1][2]
Eighteen inns with room for 4,200 guests a day line the left bank of the Tokachi River. In July 2020 the Garden Spa roadside station opened, bringing swimwear pools and footbaths that let non-residents try the moor water. In winter swans settle on the river and the Sairinka light festival glows on the snow.[1][4][5]
