The prefecture introduction is written by the editors from public sources.

Akita has 104 onsen areas and 616 springs (Ministry of the Environment, FY2024). It is Japan's byword for 'hidden springs': the Nyuto onsen district, Tamagawa and Goshogake lie deep in the Ou mountains, where strongly individual waters rise along the volcanic belt and Edo-period therapeutic bathing survives. On the plains and coast, everyday town baths are just as common; the prefectural tourism body calls Akita an 'onsen paradise of famous and hidden springs'.

Main onsen areas

East of Lake Tazawa, on the slopes of Mount Akita-Komagatake, the Nyuto district (Tsurunoyu, Kuroyu, Taenoyu, Ganiba, Ogama, Magoroku) clusters with the Tazawako Kogen and Mizusawa districts. Hachimantai in the north holds Tamagawa, Goshogake, Fukenoyu and Obuka. In the south, around Yuzawa, are Oyasukyo, Doroyu and the Akinomiya district. On the Sea of Japan side, the Oga district sits at the tip of its peninsula.

Characteristic spring types

Chloride springs are the most common in our records, followed by sulfur and sulfate. The mountain baths are mostly sulfur, with the milky water of Tsurunoyu and Goshogake as the classic examples. Tamagawa is one of Japan's rare strongly acidic springs, famous for the enormous flow from a single source. Akita also has an unusually high share of black moor-type water, mainly in the lowland baths.

Reachable by public transport

The Nyuto district is 40–55 minutes from Tazawako Station (Akita Shinkansen) on the Ugo Kotsu Nyuto bus line; Tsurunoyu is a walk or inn shuttle from the 'Tsurunoyu Onsen Iriguchi' stop, while Taenoyu and Ganiba are right by their stops. Tamagawa is about 1 hour 20 minutes by bus from Tazawako Station. Oyasukyo and Doroyu are 50–60 minutes by bus from Yuzawa Station on the Ou Line. Yokote Ekimae and Akita Onsen are town baths steps from their stations.

For solo travellers

Tamagawa is built for long therapeutic stays, with a self-catering wing, and many guests come alone. Goshogake also has a therapeutic wing, where guests sleep on heated ondol floors in a tradition unique to the area. Tsurunoyu takes solo guests but books out far ahead.

Food & culture

Kiritanpo hotpot, Hinai chicken, smoked iburigakko pickles and local sake make an inn dinner here a tour of Akita cooking. Tsurunoyu in the Nyuto district began as the Akita lords' bathing retreat and keeps its thatched honjin hall. Nearby seasonal events include Kakunodate's samurai quarter and cherry blossom, Yokote's snow-hut kamakura festival in February and Oga's Namahage visits on New Year's Eve. Kakunodate cherry-bark craft and Kawatsura lacquerware from Yuzawa are the classic souvenirs.
