Onsen areas in this atlas (excluding districts) as a share of the official count (areas with lodging). Definitions differ, so this is a rough guide.

The prefecture introduction is written by the editors from public sources.

Miyazaki has 29 onsen areas and 199 springs (Ministry of the Environment, FY2024), with about 1.04 million overnight stays a year. In the west, at the foot of the Kirishima mountains, are Kyomachi, described as the oldest onsen village in the prefecture, and the springs of the 1,200 m Ebino highland, while Aoshima sits on the coast of Miyazaki city.

Main onsen areas

In the west, Ebino has Kyomachi, Ebino Kogen and Shiratori, and Takaharu has Yunomoto. Miyazaki city has Aoshima and Miyazaki Resort Onsen; in the north, Takachiho has Takachiho Onsen and Misato has Saigo and Nango; in the south are Kitago in Nichinan and Kushima.

Characteristic spring types

Bicarbonate springs are the most common in our records, followed by chloride and simple springs. Several springs contain iodine, among them Shintomi, Miyazaki Resort Onsen and Takaya. Kyomachi is a weakly alkaline simple spring known as a 'beauty bath', and Yunomoto advertises highly concentrated carbonated water.

Reachable by public transport

For Kyomachi, get off at Kyomachi-Onsen Station on the JR Kitto Line; the inns are about five minutes' walk away.

For solo travellers

Yunomoto takes day bathers from 10 am and has a restaurant.

Food & culture

Kyomachi is an old-fashioned spa town along the Sendai River northwest of the Kirishima mountains. The Ebino highland, at 1,200 m south of Ebino city on the Miyazaki–Kagoshima border, has poppies in spring and cosmos in autumn.
