Onsen areas in this atlas (excluding districts) as a share of the official count (areas with lodging). Definitions differ, so this is a rough guide.
Niigata has 135 onsen areas and 536 springs (Ministry of the Environment, FY2024), the third most onsen areas in Japan after Hokkaido and Nagano, and over 3.5 million overnight stays a year. Tsukioka with its emerald-green water, Echigo Yuzawa spreading out from a Shinkansen station, Matsunoyama where ancient seawater rises, and Senami facing the Sea of Japan sunset show how the springs are scattered from snowy mountains to the coast.
The southern mountains of Uonuma and Joetsu hold Echigo Yuzawa, Muikamachi, Matsunoyama and, on the Myoko highlands, Akakura, Seki, Tsubame and Ikenotaira. Along the edge of the Niigata plain are Tsukioka, Murasugi and Deyu below Mt Gozu, and Yahiko and Iwamuro below Mt Yahiko. Senami lies to the north at Murakami, Sakihana up the Agano River, and the Ryotsu group on Sado Island.
Chloride springs are the most common in our records, followed by bicarbonate, sulfate and sulfur springs. Tsukioka's water is a sulfur-rich emerald green, and Matsunoyama is a hot, salty spring of seawater some 12 million years old, heated underground. Murasugi in the Gozu group is a radon spring, Tsubame on Myoko contains sulfur, and Akakura combines sulfate and bicarbonate water.
Echigo Yuzawa sits right outside Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, as little as 66 minutes from Tokyo. Tsukioka has direct buses from Niigata and Shibata stations (two a day from each). Senami is about 10 minutes by bus from Murakami on the JR Uetsu Line, and the Myoko Kogen Liner bus runs to Akakura from Joetsu-Myoko on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Matsunoyama is 25–30 minutes by bus from Matsudai on the Hokuhoku Line. Yahiko's nearest station is Yahiko on the JR Yahiko Line, a minute from Yahiko Park and about 15 minutes on foot from Yahiko Shrine.
Echigo Yuzawa has a sake-infused day bath inside its station building, making it one of the easiest onsen to visit alone. Tsukioka can be reached by direct bus and has a public bath and footbath, and Matsunoyama has inns for long therapeutic stays.
As befits a land of rice and sake, the Echigo-Yuzawa station building offers tastings from breweries across the prefecture. Local flavours include hegi soba, bound with funori seaweed and born in Uonuma; sasa-dango, red-bean dumplings in mugwort dough wrapped in bamboo leaves; and sake-bitashi, wind-dried salted salmon sliced thin and soaked in sake. Yahiko is the spa of Yahiko village, home to Yahiko Shrine, Echigo's foremost shrine. Sado keeps its ondeko demon drumming, handed down village by village, and at Aikawa, about an hour's drive from Ryotsu port, the Kasuga Shrine Noh stage, said to mark the birthplace of Sado's Noh, still hosts torchlit performances.
