Onsen areas in this atlas (excluding districts) as a share of the official count (areas with lodging). Definitions differ, so this is a rough guide.

The prefecture introduction is written by the editors from public sources.

Okinawa has 15 onsen areas and 22 springs (Ministry of the Environment, FY2024), the fewest of any prefecture on both counts. Even so, lodgings using hot-spring water record more than 2.39 million overnight stays a year. The springs supply resort hotels and day spas on the main island, and facilities on Miyako and Iriomote.

Main onsen areas

On the main island are Ryukyu Onsen in Tomigusuku, Chatan Megumi in Chatan and Yamada in Onna. Miyako Island has Miyakojima Onsen and Shigira, and Iriomote in the Yaeyama Islands has Iriomotejima Onsen.

Characteristic spring types

Chloride springs lead in our records: Ryukyu Onsen is a strong sodium chloride spring, and Miyakojima and Shigira are sodium chloride springs. Yamada is a sulfur-bearing sodium chloride-bicarbonate spring of the hydrogen-sulfide type, Iriomotejima a sodium-calcium sulfate spring, and Chatan Megumi a bicarbonate (baking-soda) spring.

Reachable by public transport

Yamada is right by the Renaissance Resort-mae stop on local bus routes 20 and 120 from the Naha area.

For solo travellers

Miyakojima Onsen is a day spa using water straight from a source beneath the island, with a large bath and an open-air bath you can simply drop into (10:00–20:00, closed on the third Wednesday).
