United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)
The specialized unit that coordinates mine action within the United Nations. In about 20 countries around the world, it coordinates and supports efforts to end the threat of landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Activities
It coordinates mine action across the entire UN system (chairing the Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action, IACG-MA), carries out landmine and UXO operations in the field, develops international standards, and shapes policy. About 3,000 field personnel work in about 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine (as of 2026).
Achievements
Established in 1997, it is designated as the coordinator of UN mine action by General Assembly resolutions (A/RES/80/74 in 2025) and Security Council resolution 2365 (2017). (Target year: 2025) [Ref 0046]
