Learn & materials

This site is designed for use in school peace education, global education, and pre-trip study before school excursions. Every piece of information has a source, so it can also be cited in research projects.

We recommend reading in the following order.

  1. FAQ — start with simple questions
  2. History — why the landmines were laid
  3. What landmines are · what UXO is
  4. Organizations · technology — what is being done now
  5. Japan's involvement · support — what we can do

Learning programs

Research Lesson: Learning about Cambodia's Landmine Problem

For: Junior high school, High school |Approx. 50 min

A learning program for a 50-minute class that uses this site to research, in order: history, the current state of landmines, clearance activities, and what you can do.

Aim: Students learn not to leave the landmine problem as just a sad story, but to sum it up in their own words — from its causes (history) to today's efforts (clearance and support) — using information with cited sources.

Inquiry Lesson: What Technology Can Do for Peace

For: High school, University |Approx. 100 min

An inquiry-based learning program that researches the technologies supporting demining — detection dogs, detection rats, and Japanese-made detectors and robots — and thinks about technology and peace.

Aim: Students learn to compare the strengths and challenges of the technologies used in demining, and to consider how technology can help achieve peace, including its limits.
