上杉謙信
A Sengoku-period warlord who ruled Echigo (today's Niigata Prefecture). He made Kasugayama Castle his home and led campaigns into Hokuriku, the Kanto region and Shinano. He was born Nagao Kagetora.
Tradition says that from age 7 to 14 he was strictly schooled by the monk Tenshitsu Koiku at Rinsen-ji, a temple at the foot of Mount Kasuga. Bishamon-do on the castle mountain is said to be where he prayed for victory before battle. He died suddenly in 1578 while preparing to march on the Kanto region, setting off a war over his succession.
