Kyoto's stages and three hot springs in Kyoto Prefecture
Photo information
Each of Kyoto's five geiko districts stages its own dance programme in spring and autumn. In autumn 2026, Gion Higashi's Gion Odori runs 1–10 November at Gion Kaikan (two shows a day), and Kamishichiken's Kotobuki-kai runs 12–18 November. At the small theatre of the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, Gion Corner presents seven traditional arts, including kyomai dance by maiko, in about an hour every evening at 18:00 and 19:00 (Tuesday to Friday only from 1 December to 11 March).
Three hot springs in Kyoto Prefecture pair well with the stage. Arashiyama Onsen is inside Kyoto city, about 11 minutes from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama on the JR Sagano Line. Yunohana Onsen is in Kameoka: about 20 minutes by rapid train to Kameoka Station, then about 25 minutes by bus. Kitsu Onsen is on the west side of the Tango Peninsula: about 2 hours 30 minutes by train from Kyoto Station to Amino, with Kitsu Onsen one stop further. It is not a day-trip distance from the city, so plan at least one night in Tango.
Spa-town geisha on stage — Atami and Yamanaka
The Atami Geigi Kenban (geisha hall) stages 'Yumemachi Odori Hana no Mai' every Saturday and Sunday in its own theatre. Tickets are ¥2,500 including tax (free for pre-school children); reservations get priority, by phone on 0557-81-3575. In 2026 the show took a break from 1 August to 6 September. From Atami Station take a bus bound for Momijigaoka for about 10 minutes to Shimizu-cho. Call the hall to confirm the start time.
In Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa, the Yamanaka-za theatre presents 'Yamanaka-bushi Shiki no Mai', sung and danced by the town's geisha, all year on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 15:30 for about 40 minutes. Adults ¥700, or ¥1,000 including entry to the Kiku-no-yu public bath next door. It is about 30 minutes by Kaga Onsen Bus from Kaga-Onsen Station (¥430).
Kusatsu's yumomi and dance
Photo information
Spa towns also have dances of their own. At Netsu-no-yu in Kusatsu Onsen you can watch yumomi, the stirring of hot spring water with wooden boards to cool it, together with dances to the Kusatsu-bushi folk song, for ¥700. Trying yumomi yourself costs ¥300 (age 6 and up). Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before each show; no advance booking. It is a minute's walk from the Yubatake.
Ideas for the future
Photo information
We have not found any regularly scheduled, publicly bookable evening of Kyoto geiko or maiko dance at a hot spring inn in Kyoto Prefecture. A dance-and-stay evening at a Yunohana inn, and a short Japanese dance class paired with a soak, are listed here as ideas only. Neither is scheduled and neither can be booked.
