AI and Satellite Imagery Analysis (AI・衛星画像解析)

A new technology that uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to narrow down areas suspected of mine contamination more accurately. At GICHD's Innovation Conference 2025, a pilot study in Cambodia by CMAC, JICA, and NEC Laboratories Europe won an award and drew attention.

AI & data

Uses

AI analyzes past survey data and satellite imagery to help survey teams identify hazardous areas. The Cambodian pilot study "AI-Assisted Survey for Humanitarian Mine Action" is testing exactly this use.

Features

At GICHD's Innovation Conference 2025, "AI-Assisted Survey for Humanitarian Mine Action: A Pilot Study in Cambodia", by a consortium of CMAC, JICA, and NEC Laboratories Europe, won an award. The study uses AI and satellite imagery to help survey teams identify hazardous areas. The HALO Trust's technology strategy also includes improving machine learning models that interpret imagery and deliver results quickly to field teams.

Advantages

If land that is not actually contaminated can be ruled out at an early stage, limited funds and personnel can be concentrated on the places that are truly dangerous, shortening the time needed to complete clearance.

Challenges

AI predictions are only an aid to surveying; final safety confirmation must be carried out through survey and clearance on the ground. At this point most efforts are still at the pilot (trial) stage, and full-scale operation will require continued data preparation and validation.
